A Method for Measuring Normal and Shear Stiffness of Laminate Stacks of Electric Motors

Structural simulations of electric motors require precise material models. Laminate stacks that are made several identical steel sheets particularly challenging to simulate using FEA. The structural stiffness laminate usually follows transversal isotropic behavior. Measuring a complete stack used in passenger cars is due its size and the high testing load needed reach real loads experienced while operation. A new method capable performing such measurements presented this article, with help equipment normally for structures civil engineering. Two sets exemplary results utilizing measurement procedure, were performed on automotive rotor stack: axial compression from cyclic test, shear at various preload levels. In case, loading unloading curves form hysteresis, changes every test cycle. Shear shows dependance preload. After loads, significant plastic deformations remain.
